The alternatives, one by one

Pulse

Best for CX teams taking customer voices to leadership

From a brief that names the research question, the topics to probe, the audience and the screener, Pulse, the AI-moderated research platform, builds the interview. People take an AI-moderated interview on a phone or a laptop at an hour of their choosing, and each one comes back as a complete transcript beside its recording.

Strengths

  • Highlight reels and clips from the interviews
  • Usability and task-based tests

Verdict A consultancy running customer studies for its clients can use Pulse white-label, under its own name. Outset and Perspective AI white-label as well, and Strella's registration forms can carry a team's logo and button color.

Where another tool fits An insurer testing a new product concept can start from Perspective AI's Insurance Concept Testing agent, one of the agents in its library. Pulse suits teams that plan research as studies, each with its own audience, screener and set of findings.

Perspective AI

Best for Product teams validating features

Perspective AI's AI Interviewer agent follows each thread and probes for specifics. A Magic summary and shareable highlights follow each study, and results export to Google Docs, Notion or Confluence, wherever a team keeps its notes.

Strengths

  • Webhooks and an MCP integration
  • Owner, Admin and Member workspace roles

Verdict Perspective AI invites people to its interviews through Slack as well as by link, email, WhatsApp or a voice call, for a program whose participants already work in Slack.

Outset

Best for Studies spanning 85+ countries

Outset turns its interviews into structured insights and custom reports, with shareable highlight reel clips, and builds its screeners with advanced logic. Its interviews run in 40+ languages, and summaries synthesized by AI follow minutes after they end.

Strengths

  • Fraud detection, and low-quality interviews re-recruited
  • Pre-loaded funds for panel incentives

Verdict Arbor's conversations can be anonymous. Outset lets participants take part without an Outset account, and it does not require their PII.

Strella

Best for Concept and usability studies

Strella's AI moderator adjusts its follow-up questions in real time as a conversation unfolds. It synthesizes interviews as they come in and backs its insights with verbatims and highlight clips, in studies held in 46+ languages.

Strengths

  • Studies launched and transcripts searched from Claude or ChatGPT
  • Filters for targeting its panel

Verdict Strella keeps a global panel of more than 8 million participants of its own, spanning B2B and B2C audiences.

Medallia

Best for Programs with research services on call

Medallia Video transcribes Zoom sessions through its connector and draws topics, themes and sentiment from the transcripts. It reads facial emotion, cuts showreels, and keeps the footage in a central video asset library.

Strengths

  • Personal data masked according to access rights
  • Survey work in 80+ languages

Verdict Arbor's work spans operations, people and HR, customer experience, executives and transformation, and safety and EHS. Medallia takes in surveys, voice, chat, social and employee feedback, for a program that reads all of those signals in one place.

How we evaluated

We compared what each tool's own product, pricing and security pages state against the criteria below. Every fact in the table above links to the page it came from, with the date it was read.

  • Participant anonymity and privacy. How the tool protects the people who speak, from anonymous joining to redacted transcripts.
  • Who can be reached. Whether the tool interviews only the people a team invites, or can also recruit participants to a profile.
  • From themes to action. Whether the analysis names root causes and recommended actions, with quotes to support them.
  • Scope of feedback. Whether the tool is set up for operational and employee feedback, customer research, or both.
  • Security attestations. The certifications and privacy commitments each vendor publishes.

Which one to choose

  • If ranking and trade-off questions call for MaxDiff or conjoint, choose Medallia, whose Agile Research runs both beside its surveys.
  • If the interview should sit inside a product or a website, choose Perspective AI, whose Embed API places it there.
  • If a study's participants should come through Third Bridge or ProSapient, choose Outset, which counts both among its 25+ panel integrations.

What Pulse offers a team leaving Arbor

Led by the AI, or by a researcher

A Pulse interview can be led by its AI moderator, which asks again when a reply is vague, or by a live human moderator on the same platform. Strella, too, lets a researcher moderate in place of its AI.

Every quote tied to its transcript

Arbor's reports name root causes and recommended actions and include quotes. In Pulse, themes are grouped by what people said and each quote traces to its transcript. A Strella quote opens its participant session, and Perspective AI's analysis sessions cite their sources.

Video as well as voice

A Pulse interview can run on video as well as by voice, so its video insights can add the participant's emotion and on-screen behavior, which a transcript alone would miss. Outset, Strella and Medallia Video work with video too.
