Pulse vs Maze

Last reviewed . Reviewed every quarter.

Maze is a user research platform on which research, product and design teams run prototype tests, card sorts, tree tests, surveys and interviews. Pulse vs Maze puts it next to Pulse, the AI-moderated research platform that insights and CX teams use to run customer interviews at scale.

When to choose Maze

Maze takes prototypes from Figma, Axure, Figma Make, Lovable or Bolt, so a product or design team can try a flow while the design can still change, and it offers surveys as a study type beside the tests. Reports are generated automatically and can be shared with stakeholders, and its integrations carry results into Slack, Miro and Notion, so engineers and product managers who work outside Maze still see what a test found.

When a team needs people to test with, the Maze Panel, sourced from third-party providers, reaches millions of participants in 150+ countries through 400+ filters, professional ones included. It draws on Prolific for Core studies and on Respondent, Bilendi and Terac for Extended ones. Participants join in a browser with no download, and use the Zoom app to share a phone's screen in a moderated session. Maze puts panel turnaround at under 5 hours on average for unmoderated studies and five days for moderated ones.

Some customers answer a phone call or a WhatsApp message more readily than a study link. Maze's AI-moderated conversations run on audio, with the camera required, optional or off as the researcher sets it, while a Pulse interview can be a voice or video conversation, a text chat, a phone call or a WhatsApp exchange. On its enterprise plan, Pulse also offers data residency options, so a team can settle where interview data is kept before the first study.

Moving from Maze to Pulse

  1. Collect the goals behind the Maze conversations. Gather the interview studies the team has run on Maze, with the goals each one set out. Each goal becomes the research question of a Pulse brief, alongside the topics to explore and the audience to reach.
  2. Rebuild panel filters as recruited groups. Audiences the team filtered on the Maze Panel become profiles in the brief, and people it invited with its own Maze links come across in an uploaded list or through a shared link. Where segments are compared, such as workspace admins and their end users, one study recruits several groups, each with its screener.
  3. Field the first study between design rounds. Launch the first study while the designers carry on with the next iteration. Customers take the interview from a phone or a laptop at an hour that suits them, and conversations keep arriving while the design work goes on, so the reasons are in hand for the review that closes the round.
  4. Give the reasons to the people shaping the design. Export the findings as a Word document for the product spec and as slides for the design critique, so the reasons customers gave travel with the decisions they are meant to shape, and the next round of prototypes starts from them.
  5. Trace each theme back to what was said. Pulse groups what customers said into themes, with the quotes behind each one, and every quote traces to its transcript, so a designer who doubts a theme at the critique can read the exchange it came from before the finding shapes a screen.

How far Maze and Pulse overlap

A research team setting up regular customer interviews will find both platforms ready to run them with an AI moderator, which Maze offers on its Enterprise plans only. Maze's AI moderator asks follow-up questions in real time, as deep as the researcher sets, and Pulse's moderator follows each answer, giving a vague reply a second question. Each platform also returns a conversation for reading soon after it ends. Maze has a transcript, tags and themes ready right after each interview, and in Pulse each interview comes in as a full transcript and recording while the study's other conversations are still running.

Setting up and running a study in Maze and in Pulse

Drafting the discussion guide

Maze offers templates, and its AI drafts a discussion guide from the goals a researcher enters. Pulse builds the interview from a brief as well, one that names the research question, the topics, the audience and its screener, and every participant then hears one consistent set of questions.

Checking who takes part

Maze checks its panel participants with fraud detection, profile checks, speeding checks and attention checks. Pulse runs fraud checks on every participant in a study, for a research team that has to vouch for who it heard from.

Incentives and credits

Maze folds participant incentives into its credit prices, so the credits a study spends cover what its participants are paid. Pulse handles participant incentives on the team's behalf, for the people it recruits and interviews in a study.

Usability and task testing

Maze measures usability with metrics, heatmaps, paths and misclicks, and runs interviews on the same platform. Pulse lists usability and task-based testing among its study types, beside interviews, surveys and concept tests, for a product team that plans both kinds of work.

Seats, permissions and single sign-on

Maze's roles are Owner, Admin and Editor, with a Collaborator role on Enterprise that uses no seat, and single sign-on on Enterprise plans. Pulse has Owner, Admin and Member roles, and SAML and OIDC single sign-on on request on the enterprise plan.
