When to choose Hotjar

To see what visitors do on its pages, a web or product team has Hotjar's heatmaps, recordings and funnels, which capture that behavior page by page and step by step. A team whose questions are answered by watching, which page, which step, which button, may find all it needs in Hotjar's analytics.

Hotjar's surveys and feedback widgets let a web team ask visitors a question on the page they are looking at, beside the recordings of what they did there. Contentsquare's free plan covers this Voice of Customer side as well as the analytics, and links to 10+ tools, Slack and Jira among them, for a team that plans its fixes in those tools.

In a Pulse interview, taken by voice, by video or in text chat at a time that suits each one, customers can say in their own words what held them up at a step. Human analysts are there alongside the platform as well, for a web team that has no researcher of its own.

Moving from Hotjar to Pulse

  1. Start from the pages where visitors hesitate. The Hotjar replays the team has watched point to the pages where visitors hesitate. Name those pages in the Pulse brief as areas the interview must reach, such as delivery costs or trust in the payment form, and the interview Pulse builds from the brief will ask customers about each.
  2. Profile the visitors from the checkout survey. Use the answers the Hotjar survey on the checkout page collected to describe the visitors who stopped there, such as first-time shoppers or people comparing plans, as a profile in the Pulse brief. Pulse recruits participants who fit it and screens each one for fraud; customers already in the team's records can go in as an uploaded list.
  3. Keep the first round to one step. Keep the first study to the single step where the Hotjar funnel shows most visitors leaving, and let the conversation stay on how customers decided there, what they expected to find and what made them stop. A narrow first study is quicker to read, and easier for the design team to act on.
  4. Hear several customers weigh the step together. Where Hotjar's recordings show visitors handling the step in different ways and the first interviews give different reasons for leaving it, bring several customers like them into a focus group on Pulse, so the design team hears them weigh one explanation against another before it settles on a fix.
  5. Pass the clips to the design team. Pull the telling moments from the Pulse interview recordings as highlight reels and clips for the designers who will change the step, and play them next to the Hotjar replays of the same step in the design review, so the designers watch a visitor stall there and then hear a customer give the reason.

The research ground Hotjar and Pulse share

Hotjar is part of Contentsquare, which opens no new Hotjar accounts, and a new Contentsquare customer cannot buy Hotjar's moderated interviews. Such a team, if it also wants to interview its customers, can hold those interviews on Pulse, where an AI moderator or a person runs each one.

A design team used to watching visitors can keep watching on Pulse, where an interview that runs on video comes with video insights on the customer's on-screen behavior and the emotion a transcript misses.

Analysis, APIs, sign-in and privacy on Hotjar and Pulse

AI summaries of what people said

Contentsquare writes an AI summary report for Hotjar surveys, and tags the responses with AI for sentiment. Pulse's analysis works on whole interviews, grouping what customers said into themes and placing the supporting quotes under each, so a designer can read the words behind a theme.

Plain-language questions about the data

Hotjar's Sense Chat answers plain-language questions about a team's data. A Pulse study's results can be questioned as well, and the answers come from what participants told the moderator, so one question can be asked of what visitors did on Hotjar and of what customers said on Pulse.

APIs for other systems

Hotjar's APIs come with the Pro and Enterprise plans, sold through Contentsquare. Pulse offers a public API as well, for an engineering team that wants to connect the research platform to the company's own systems.

Signing in

Hotjar keeps SAML single sign-on for Pro and Enterprise, while free and Growth accounts sign in with Google OAuth. Pulse turns on SAML or OIDC single sign-on at an enterprise-plan customer's request, so a team moving Hotjar from Google OAuth to SAML can put Pulse behind the same setup.

Where personal data is removed

Hotjar redacts personal data automatically, in the visitor's browser. Pulse redacts personal data from its interview transcripts, for a team that shares those transcripts with colleagues outside research, such as a design agency working on the checkout.
