Circana alternatives at a glance

  • This page covers the research side of Circana, its surveys, concept tests and panels; retail-measurement and point-of-sale providers are outside it.
  • Kantar, Toluna and Echovane recruit participants from panels of their own, NielsenIQ tracks what households buy through its Homescan panel, and all four put concepts in front of the people they study.
  • Circana's Emiri agent takes natural-language questions of its datasets, as Kantar's KaiA, NielsenIQ's Optiq and Echovane's Chat with Data do of theirs, and Pulse answers questions asked of a study's results.

The alternatives, one by one

Pulse

Best for Brand and category teams that interview shoppers at scale

Using Pulse, the AI-moderated research platform, brand teams put their questions to shoppers through an AI moderator that follows every answer, putting a second question to a vague reply, and every shopper hears the same questions from one guide.

Strengths

  • Owner, Admin and Member roles
  • Single sign-on by SAML and OIDC, on the enterprise plan, on request

Verdict Circana targets shoppers by channel and purchase behavior. In Pulse, a brand's lapsed and loyal buyers can be recruited into one study, each group screened to a profile of its own.

Where another tool fits Diary studies, where shoppers log their experience entry by entry, suit Toluna Start Qual. Pulse serves insights teams whose questions for shoppers are best put in an interview.

NielsenIQ

Best for Deciding which ideas go to launch

NielsenIQ's UK Homescan panel doubled to 30,000 households, and its BASES tests ideas, concepts and claims. Its AI In-Depth Interviews reach respondents on their own devices, with an AI moderator adapting each conversation as it goes.

Strengths

  • 85% fewer manual reports through AI automation
  • Analysis accelerated by large language models

Verdict Circana runs the National Consumer Panel as a joint venture with NielsenIQ. NielsenIQ's qualitative range takes in AI ethnography and research communities that run over several days, for a client that already reads data from the panel the two share.

Kantar

Best for Pack and price testing at a research firm

Kantar Profiles gives researchers access to 100M research-ready respondents in its global panel, and they are checked by Qubed, an AI fraud-detection tool, and by more than 10 further proprietary tools.

Strengths

  • AI analysis through Kantar Converser
  • LifePoints panelists paid fixed or LOI-based incentives

Verdict Kantar Live gathers 75 to 100 people online at once under a Kantar moderator, pairing live polls with discussion in depth.

Toluna

Best for Qual and surveys run on one platform

Toluna's research covers audiences, concepts, products, creative and brand health. In Toluna Start Qual, people answer by voice, text or video, QProbe asks a tailored follow-up when a comment is too thin, and projects start gathering insights within hours.

Strengths

  • SmartCloud AI theme and sentiment analysis
  • Points-based rewards and custom incentives
  • Real-time device, behavior and identity checks

Verdict Toluna's surveys carry MaxDiff, heatmaps and text highlighters, and Circana's link answers to verified purchase behavior. A study built on those question types belongs on Toluna.

Echovane

Best for AI interviews in 65+ languages

Echovane holds AI-moderated interviews over video and voice, with follow-ups that branch into sub-topics. Its study types take in ideation, ethnography, shopper journeys, brand equity, usage and attitude, and concept, ad, pack and claims testing, among others. It analyzes survey numbers and interview answers side by side, and it will run a study itself or hand the platform to the team.

Strengths

  • PowerPoint reports and a client dashboard
  • From brief to analyzed insights in hours
  • A network of 20M+ respondents

Verdict Circana's panelists upload their receipts or link their loyalty accounts. Echovane lists shop-alongs among its study types, so the shopper's own account of the trip can sit beside the receipt.

How we evaluated

We compared what each tool's own product, pricing and security pages state against the criteria below. Every fact in the table above links to the page it came from, with the date it was read.

  • Purchase data or opinion. Whether the firm tracks what shoppers buy, asks them what they think, or links the two.
  • Concept, pack and claims testing. How ideas, packs, prices and claims are tested, and on whose panel.
  • Shopper context. Whether the research reaches shoppers where they choose, through shop-alongs, ethnography or diaries.
  • Panel coverage. Countries, panel size and the profiling used to target shoppers.
  • How far the questioning goes. Whether an interviewer, human or AI, follows up on a shopper's answer, and whether a thin answer gets a second question.

Which one to choose

  • If claims should be screened by synthetic personas, choose Toluna, which screens claims with Synthetic Personas and also runs automated concept tests.
  • If a pack has to hold up where it is awkward to use, choose Echovane, whose Workflow Analysis maps how usable packaging is in demanding conditions.
  • If shoppers' transcripts should reach the brand team with personal data removed, choose Pulse, which redacts it from every transcript.

What consumer goods teams get from Pulse

The pack in front of the shopper

Shown a pack or a concept partway through a Pulse interview, a shopper reacts on screen, and video insights record the emotion and on-screen behavior in that reaction.

The brand's own customers too

A brand can upload a list of its own customers to Pulse, or share a link, to interview people who already buy from it; Echovane and Toluna Start Qual also reach a team's own users. For other shoppers, Pulse recruits to the profile the brief describes.

A phone call or WhatsApp

Shoppers can take a Pulse interview as a phone call or over WhatsApp, beside voice, video and text chat, so each person in a study answers on the channel that suits them.
